| I recently purchased a plasma TV and the picture makes all the people look short and fat (and me feel good!!) Why is this happening?
This happens when a 4:3 picture is stretched to fill a 16:9 wide screen. The function is called different things on different TVs, such as “zoom”, “wide” and “panoramic”. Problems with this function can also cause you to lose the scoreboard from sports broadcasts.
If you have a 16:9 capable source (eg digital set-top box, digital pay TV, DVD player) make sure that you program the settings to the 16:9 screen. Otherwise, try different ‘aspect’ settings to eliminate or reduce this stretching. Keep in mind that the best setting is 4:3, but you will get black bars down the side of your picture.
A clever way to check if your picture has been altered is to look at the Channel 9 and Channel 10 logos or watermarks at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. The 9 logo should be perfectly square and the 10 logo round. If not, your picture is being stretched. |
