My VCR is playing up, should I get another one or are VCRs dead?

Very  few major brands are still producing VCRs and have predictably moved into digital video (DVD and Hard-Drive recorders). But that’s not good news for the majority of us who have a library of recorded VHS videos.

Perhaps you might consider a “combo” recorder that has both a VCR and DVD recorder in the one unit.

This will also allow you to transfer your precious home movies and special videos to DVD which will last a lot longer than tape (which does not age well).
